Went out to eat the other night, I can't get enough of restaurant beer lists :>) I asked my server what kind of beer they had, she replied, "we pretty much have everything, what do you want?" I said "Okay, I'll take a Stone IPA". She said "Let me get the list". I ordered Heineken, it was the most exotic beer they had :>0 Gotta love some people definition of EVERYTHING!

Yep, I've had that happen too. I ended up getting a Boulevard Pale Ale. Local, and the only thing that wasn't typical macro fare.

I find I'm only satisfied with the beer selection at a brewpub, most of the time.

+1...all the commercial staples taste the same, and haven't an iota of character. Though, I do go for the Sam Adams line, at times. That's a bit of confession, don't tell anyone.

I'm starting to see a lot more places that have at least one decent beer. The success of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale has been a big one, and Longhammer IPA seems to be popping up more often (didn't AB take over the distribution for RedHook? Perhaps that's why). Also, at least here in NC, where there are a solid handful of regional breweries (Cottonwood, Highland, Duck Rabbit, Kind Beer), I can often get one of those on tap when I go out.

Yeah, I love these situations where the waitperson tells you they have everything. If you ever have one start rattling off the selections they have, just forget about it. There should either be a list (hopefully of some good beers) or the waitperson can just name the 4 beers they have and call it a day. The part that kills me is when homebrewers or other beer geeks... ahem... beer enthusiasts don't like the beer selection and order water or a Coke. Dude. If you're out and the best beer they have on the menu is Killians or Sam Adam Boston Lager, don't get water or soda. If their best beer was Busch Light, I might just change restaurants.

I once had a waitress tell me that Blue Moon was a heavy, dark beer. (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/dry.gif)
I once was at a Spanish restaurant and ordered "Estrella" (which is quite nice, btw) and got a Stella Artois. (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/dry.gif)
I once was at a Mexican restaurant and ordered a Negro Modelo and the very nice waitress said, "Today Coronas are only $2.50" and I said, "That's okay". Apparently she thought I meant "okay" and brought me a Corona. (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/dry.gif)

Yeah, that one gets me giggling too... we got everything. When talking to a class mate or a friend at a party I hear some good one's too, everyone thinks they have tried it all. I remember once this kid commented that it didn't seem like the brewer used any roasted hops... (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/facepalm.gif)

I guess they figured, "a Star by any other name..." (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/wink.gif)
One of the Spanish restaurants near us carries Cruz Campo. Try that one if you get the chance, it's my favorite Spanish beer.

Luckily, most places around here have realized that good beer can be a profit center, so a lot of places have amazing beer lists. Even so, it's practically required-by-law that any place within 30 miles of Boston sell Guiness, so at least you know you'll have that option.

Like most of us that love beer, though, I should drink less than I do, so if they don't have anything worthwhile I tend to figure I don't need the empty alcohol consumption and save my liver for something good later.

This is something that people say that can absolutely NEVER be true. If someone says this to me, I immediately ask for Westvleteren. That's how I roll... ;-)

My wife always cringes when she hears someone say that because she knows my reply

I usually don't bother anymore. Between poorly cleaned lines and bad selection it is not worth it. There is a BBQ place in Charlotte that has a great selection though.

I also agree with KenL that a good place will have a beer list.

I don't think I've ever heard the "pretty much everything" response yet. But I do enjoy when I order something that IS on the menu, or you see it sitting there in the display case, and you say, "I'll have a Negra Modelo", and she looks at you like you're speaking Spanish or something.
