I picked up a PhilMill on Craigslist and I'm dying to give it a test run. I'd like to make something simple (and cheap) with the new mill as a kind of test run. I'd still like to go with a 5 gallon batch because, if I'm putting in the effort, I might as well get a decent amount of beer. I'm open to any type of ale. Any suggestions?

Also, does anyone have advice on grinding grain? Especially, does anyone have experience with the PhilMill?

My last brew session/grain crushing was horrible. I had half the grain where it was worm and half in a cold room. Trying to crush the cold grain took very long. So my suggestion is don't try to crush cold grain.

A simple amber ale would be good. While a hefe seems like a good first impulse, the wheat was always tougher to crush than the pils malt. I would stay clear of that for the first brew.

I had a philmill for years and loved it. I think you will have good experiences with it.

The one thing I did was crank the gap as cnarrow as I could get it. Then I used rice hulls for every beer. Worked well.

Good Brewing.
