I think I done stupid (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/sad.gif) ... It is November 4th.. I racked my cider on October 31st... For four days I had a solid rubber stopper plugging my carboy.
I was going to put an airlock on it after it was cleaned and sanitized it, but somehow I forgot to. This is my second rack. I racked it once from my primary fermentor and then once from my carboy into this current carboy. When I unplugged the rubber stopper there was enough pressure to be released that it made a quick and noisey escape. I put on the airlock and it started to bubble. Is there something that should be done?? Or will this have affected the taste of the cider? I don't want to have hindered the refining and aging process. |

When I unplugged the rubber stopper there was enough pressure to be released that it made a quick and noisey escape. I put on the airlock and it started to bubble. +1 on no problem. If it had blown the stopper and sat there for days you would have run into an oxidation issue. All you did was slow down the out-gassing [of CO2]. I've done that before..... |

no if it sat open for 4 days you'd run into contamination issues.
You need surface agitation (stirring, splashing, pouring) to introduce oxygen into the liquid. (pools of water with no current/waves = stagnant water that can't support life because it contains no oxygen. put an airstone in the water and it is no longer stagnant...e.g. an aquarium) |
