I'm wondering if anyone out there has any info, advice or experience with mold forming on the top of their beer. I'm wondering if the beer is ruined, or if, like with cheese, it just protects it and helps it age. The beer has been aging in the barrel for 8 months and I just wanted to find out if I should destroy it or try to save it.

Sounds like a pellicle which means some wild yeast or bacteria, unless you added some Brett in which case, that's how it works.

Any photos?

I've had that issue before and the beer ended up having a sort of slime to it.
