I put together a spreadsheet with a few handy mead-related functions, and thought I'd post it for anyone else who might find it useful.
There's three tabs. - Calculator This tab has a few calculator tools. In each, the green cells are input fields, the rest will be calculated automatically. * The OG Calculator can help figure out the OG. There's room for 4 ingredients, so it can be used for cysers and braggots in addition to straight meads. * The Brix to SG convertor is self explanatory.. * Staggered Nutrients Add point calculator is designed to give the proper SG levels for each nutrient, according to Hightest's staggered nutrient system given an OG and Target FG. The Staggered Nutrient calculator may not be working completely right. The 2nd addition looks to give the right numbers, but I'm not sure about the first. The faq says it should be done when the gravity drops 'between 2-3 brix.' I used .004 SG for each brix, so it just subtracts .008 and .012 to generate the two numbers. These seem different than example values Hightest has provided though, so there may be something wrong here I'm hoping someone can help correct. - Log The log tab is for recording dates and gravity readings. It also has a notes column - Fermentation rate chart Using the data on the log tab, this tab generates a chart showing the rate of fermentation over time. Anyhow, I hope someone finds this useful. If anyone has any addition or enhancement ideas, I'd be anxious to hear about them. EDIT BY Matt the Mead Maker: I've made some pretty significant additions to jjarmoc's excellent spreadsheet. It now does a variety of computations associated with fruit additions and creating melomels. Enjoy! Spreadsheet |

Nice spreadsheet. Yestereday I wanted to attach an edited version of my personal Excel calculations, but there was a problem with the board allowing .XLS files. Now that has been corrected. So here's my Basic Honey OG & NAS add point speadsheet for comparsion. Enjoy (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/smile.gif) 11/06/05 Spreadsheet revised.

Man, that's fantastic! Thanks for taking the time(both of you) for providing the Excel downloads. Excel freakin' kills me. (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/tongue.gif)

Wow! Thanks! I was just struggling through the calculations to figure out how to make a medium mead with Eau de Vie yeast (21% tollerance) and that was a huge help!
Question: is there a way I can calculate how fruit sugars will change my gravity as well? This post has been edited by ze'ev: Aug 24 2005, 01:47 PM |

Yes, you need to get a copy (or do a web search) for BYO magazine V8N4 (Jul-Aug 2002), pg 48. There's an article there that can be adpated to using fruit in beverages other than beer... FYI -
I updated my spreadsheet after it was pointed out in another thread that the brix to SG formula may not have been very accurate at the high gravities that are common in Meads and Ciders. I scoured the net looking for the 'best' formula I could find, but there are so many out there it's really difficult to tell which is most accurate. So, in the new sheet I've included four different formulas and noted the sources of each. In most cases they only vary a small degree, but I'll leave it up to everyone to decide which formula/source they're most comfortable with. The link in my original post now points to the updated version of the sheet. It also has some 'sample' data from my current batch of mead which shows how the log and chart will look with actual data in them. |

In about a week I'll be making a cider that will have a few pounds of muscovado sugar in it. I'd like to estimate the gravity in advance so that I don't have too high/low of a final gravity. Will any of these calculators help?
I don't have excel on this pc, so I can't find out right now. If the calculators can't do it, does anyone have any tips for me? Thanks!! |

Either of them should work, if you can find info on how much gravity muscavado will contribute per pound.. that'll be the hard part. On my sheet, you can just add muscavado in place of one of the ingredients on the left side, with it's gravity contibution just to the right and fill in the quantities.. |
