Hey, with all the crazy news about hops, I am very glad that I have some of my own growing at home. I plan to put in a much bigger Hop yard next year (Like crazy BIG). (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/devil.gif) Just wondering how big some of you have 'em?

I currently have 3 Cascade, 2 Centennial, and 2 Chinook. And a couple that I tore off and planted in other spots but forgot to label.... (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/sorry.gif) This year I got about 2.5 pounds of dried hops.

All of these are just growing up on my deck rail and a couple on a small trelis.

I agree! I have about 1/2 an acre as a back yard and would like to build some garden space (mainly to cut down on mowing) so i would like to see how these hop gardens are laid out. Although i am unsure how well hops will grow in the hot oklahoma summer, i have yet to do the research.

They did great here in Alabama, and it's about as hot as it gets here. They love full sun, but need water, too. And, good airflow.

I may dig up some rhizomes from my cascade and nugget and expand my operation. For now, I only have two main cascade and 2 nugget going. That means 4 strings with 3-4 bines per string. I also have a sterling and glacier growing next to the porch, but they don't get enough sun.

I dug some Glacier rhizomes Saturday when clearing the bines for winter.

Anybody know how to keep them viable until spring?

Anybody want one?

Edit after the split:
Added a poll to see if there is any interest in a rhizome pass. Besides viability, the only problem I see is shipping. It might be expensive enough to make the pass not worth the trouble.

What do you think?

I'll trade you a homebrew for a rhizome.

Well, you asked for pics.........

I grew all Cascade this year. Instead of growing right up against the house this year, I pulled the plants out 6ft from the house. This angle allowed for better sun and made it real easy to pick hops from underneath the bines.

I ended up harvesting about a pound and a half total throughout the year.

This first pic is from 6.22

These next three are from 8.1

I only have 1 Centennial that survived my dog's excavations. But I harvested 1lb (dry weight) from that one plant. Must be a good reason most commercial growers are in Eastern WA, huh?

Those are some really good pictures and good inspiration for my hop garden next year.

Halucin8 do you have any words of wisdom or advice on the subject of growing your own hops?

Words of Wisdom??? Hmmm......

Defeat the Japanese Beetles and everything will be fine. I am going to try using nematodes next year to control them.

No fertilizer.

Water with captured rain water.

The hottie is my wife. Just married Aug. 25th. She actually brewed her first beer last weekend. She's so proud.

BTW, the guy is not me. It's a friend of mine who was gracious enough to help out.

Yes, I did use the traps. I kept them well away from the plants as they tend to attract more beetles from the surrounding area. As well as nematodes, I will also be using milky spore disease next year. I really hate those beetles. Between the beetles and the deer it's hard to keep a garden of any sort.

BTW - Since i'm the only that posted picture proof of growing hops, do I win the contest for the biggest??? (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/biggrin.gif)

Uh, two Sterlings, two Willammette, three Goldings and five Cascades. Definite overkill - More hops than I know what to do with (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/smile.gif) Pictures posted to one of the previous hop threads...

Halucin8, Props to the great crops!(sorry had to do it). I will be starting my crops next season. Spent all summer preping the soil. Out of all that is involved in growing hops I think the biggest obsticle is trying to figure out which ones to grow since they hopefully will provide bountiful rewards year after year.

Pics on this post definitly help out with planning and preping fo rnext season, Thanks to all have contributed!!!
