I tilted my tun after everything was drained and collected about 1/2G of wort.
Can I boil this and use it to make a starter? |

Probably but I would guess that the gravity is going to be too low. I have done this before and had to add some water with additional dme to get my gravity up to ~1.038 for 1 gallon. I boiled it for 25 minutes with just a few hops added, cooled, measured out 1000ml and put them in freezer bags for frozen storage. Works great!

Leave them out and you don't have to worry about skunking your starter. dj |

Next time around, back off the sparge water so that this 1/2 gallon ends up in your boil pot and your boil volume is correct. I.e., use a half gallon less next time!

After the sparge drain ( line was clear of anything ) I decided to tilt the tun to see what happens and I got 1/2G of wort. Should I tilt the tun while draining the sparge water? |

Why the hops? Leave them out and you don't have to worry about skunking your starter. dj Did that off a suggestion from a BJCP judge in my LHBC, says it helps act as a preservative. I only used a few pellets worth. (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/sorry.gif) |
