Well, my LHBS has closed its doors. My location, anyway, has closed its doors. They had shops on both sides of Kansas City, but as of May 20, they pulled the plug on the Missouri side.

I'm not sure what to say -- definitely it sucks. That's where I got my start homebrewing, and it's handy to have a place close by when you break a hydrometer or need yeast at the last minute, etc.

On the other hand, everything in the store was always overpriced, even before the hops/malt price run-ups recently. In addition, the selection at the store wasn't so great. It wasn't terrible, but basically, LD Carlson was their only supplier, so you couldn't really get anything outside their catalog. No Wyeast, no SAF yeast, no whirlfloc, no Weyermann malts... there were a bunch of things you couldn't get there.

I still supported the place -- I bought hundreds of $$/year of supplies there even after I went AG and started buying grain and hops in bulk -- but I couldn't do all my shopping there. Even if I wanted to afford the higher prices, they didn't have everything I wanted to buy and couldn't even get it.

Anyway, looks like I'm all online now. Driving over to Kansas and back costs me around $13 these days (and my car gets fairly decent mileage).

(IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/finger.gif) economic realities...

Pfft,
EH

Total bummer, dude! If I were to lose my local LHBS I would probably not brew so often. They have great prices and a good selection. Sure there are other stores around the area but my local is next to my favorite brew pub too. It's always fun to stop in for one when you go get supplies. (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/hehe.gif)

I got the email too. Welcome to being 30-40 miles to the closest LHBS. I wont even attempt to drive any longer as shipping costs less. You can always stop brewing like i did, then you wont have to worry about it.

He's recruited others to do that work for him. (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/hehe.gif)

Seriously though, that stinks, EH. The thing that stinks most about mail order is trying to get liquid yeast at certain times of the year. Fortunately I haven't had to mail order yeast.

BTW, the insulation is at tj's place.

That sucks Eric. I thought it was bad when my LHBS moved from 7 blocks away to a 10 minute drive, and if that went away I could drive 15 minutes to one, 20 minutes to the other.

Let's all take it as a reminder that without us buying stuff, sometimes at inflated prices, a local homebrew shop cannot exist. Just like a local book store or whatever.

Someone mentioned having to drive 30-40 miles. Well, that's not bad. I treasure having a little hole-in-the-wall LHBS about 35 miles away, and I'll continue to buy at least half of my kits there and anything else justifiable.

Remember too that you're not adding on that $7-8 shipping (or worse, "actual cost" of shipping).

If we don't support 'em, we can't complain when they're gone.

Except for convenience you didn't loose much. I went to the other store once and didn't want to go back. I heard a while back the H/W owners divorced. That probably was the final straw. Go to B&B and you have an excuse to drop by my place. The door's always open......

I love the lhbs, but I've been getting so much in sacks and pounds that my brewing wouldn't suffer much if they weren't there. The owners are good friends, so I'd have other issues with it, but homebrew stores are maybe more important for noobs (along with homebrew clubs) than the dedicated drink-yourself-into-a-stupor-daily brewer who will do what it takes to get the brew on. I do enjoy the local business aspect even on its own. Who wants a world where everyone buys stuff shipped from BBB?

I would DIE if my LHBS went out. I find that perishables are priced very well and he rotates stock quite frequently.
The hardware is a little overpriced, but I never buy that stuff there.

I have never purchased my ingredients anywhere else. There is something to be said about pulling your own malt and milling it yourself in the shop to your specification. (someday I will own my own mill).

My LHBS is about 30 miles away. I go there from time to time. Mostly to pick up ingredients that I had forgotten to order online. In the beginning I purchased everything there. The manager was very helpful in getting me started. I should probably still continue buying from there...
