i think about this every time i'm moving a full carboy. Fact is that right after brewing i'm usually slightly intoxicated and then carrying over 5lbs of wort in a container that could slash my foot just about off. I'm seriously thinking of moving to Better Bottles. I'll keep the glass for aging Imp Stouts and BWs but that's about it.

Thanks all.
I always carry it with two hands but this time I was reaching for the door. It funny (in a bad way) seconds before I was thinking about how bad it would suck for a carboy to drop and a batch lost. Later, while telling my wife the story, I said that I tried stopping it with my foot. My fatherly and dumb instincts took over. She said I was lucky not to loose a toe. I said it might have been worth it. Now it will be months before I know the effect a .5 pound of chocolate malt will do to my Fat Tire recipe. (besides make it a brown ale) I guess I didn't realize that a carboy fits into a milk crate. I have learned so many things in one short crisp September day. Good news is that the garage got cleaned! |

Dude that sucks. I know some tailgaters who noticed a 'disturbance in the force'.
I recently picked up a BrewHauler nylon carboy carrying thing. I really like it and it makes transporting full carboys up and down the basement stairs easy. As a consolation - How bout those Cowboys? (IMG:style_emoticons/brewboard/wink.gif) |

Sorry to hear about the loss of the beer but I'm glad you are okay.
One (empty) broken carboy was enough for me. Cleaning up glass from all over the basement sucked enough let alone if it was full. I now ferment in plastic and secondary in kegs. No glass for me. |

I'm going BB all the way, except for SS conicals, and a super-duper 10 gallon corny. Not worth the risk in my view. I have little kids running around too. It's dangerous enough to be boiling large quantities of wort and pumping fluids with electric pumps. Who needs the headache.

Sorry to hear of your loss brother!
it was exactly this situation that netted me a lot of my equipment including my kegging setup. A homebrewer that my Step-dad worked with busted a 5er of Stout and subsequently quit the hobby. Hang in there, dont let her die in vain Gary |

Sorry man. Stillwater is in dire need of good beer, so that is a double catastrophe.

Welcome to the club.
I'm sorry for your loss but havent any of you glass carboy users heard of the "brew hauler"? I move my carboys from the garage to basement with no worries. When it comes time to keg I carry them up the basement stairs and keg. No worries. Just a thought. I've only broken 1 glass carboy and that was cleaning it with the wire brush. It only cracked the glass. A brewhauler is exactly how I broke my carboy. Those straps can and will come loose unexpectedly. |

This week I am finally going to replace the 6.5 gallon carboy I broke over 2 years ago. I still have one but need to crank out more brews. I was thinking about a 6 gallon glass but after I broke the last one I am leaning towards plastic. I think it about that day in December 05, each time I brew, when I felt it slip as I was dumping the spent One Step into my sink and instinct kicked in and I let it go and flew back. Luckily it was not beer and I didn't get hurt. Made a mess with all that water but would have been worse if it was wort or beer. I feel your pain!

Sorry for your loss.
Another reason i love fermenting in cornies. Indestructible and integrated handles. |
